Following the economic downturn of the past couple of years, it is apparent that holidaymakers are now far more budget conscious. As such, it seems that Britain’s vast army of caravan and motorhome owners are not only getting larger, but recent research has suggested it is also becoming younger.
Early indications from UK holiday parks suggest that this summer is set to be the busiest yet for caravan holidays and through the bookings and online enquiries, it has become evident that younger generations are moving away from costly package holidays abroad in favour of a ‘staycation’.
‘Glamping’, a glamorous alternative to back-to-basics camping holidays has been one reason suggested for the upturn in caravanning in particular. A recent survey carried out by specialist insurance company, Safeguard, has highlighted a 62% increase in the number of quotes for caravan and motorhome cover being sought after by 20 to 30 year olds over the past year.
The return of the ‘staycation’ and great British family holiday has seen caravan sales increase by up to 15%. The growth in UK caravanning holidays amongst young couples and families has helped fuel the industry further.
The Caravan Club has also reported that the club’s membership once again reached again reached a 14th successive year of growth and bookings and transactions are at record levels for holiday parks across the UK. There are now more than half-a-million caravans and motorhomes in regular use in the UK and expected growth is extremely buoyant.
Caravan Club members alone spent more than £400m in rural tourism economy in 2009 and that figure is likely to be overtaken in 2010.
